AV¾«Ę· Athletics is pleased to announce that Kelvin Ma will be joining the Chargers as head coach of the menā€™s volleyball starting for the 2022/23 season. Ma brings an extensive understanding and passion for volleyball and long-term athletic development.

He joins the Chargers coaching staff after five years with the Pacific Western Athletic Association (PACWEST) Douglas College Royals as assistant coach of both the menā€™s and the womenā€™s teams. Ma also served as the assistant coach, National Excellence Program with Volleyball Canada, and coached various high school and club teams.

Ma is currently completing the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) Performance Coach certification, one of the highest levels of accreditation in coaching and reflects his advanced knowledge of all aspects of the game. He also holds NCCP Advance Development and NCCP Development certification.

ā€œI was delighted to find out that Kelvin applied for this position as he turned to coaching very early and has actively pursued progressively higher levels of certification,ā€ said retiring menā€™s volleyball head coach, Charles Parkinson. ā€œHis value in team and integrity has allowed him to pursue excellence and continuous growth, which is evident in his drive to complete one of the highest levels of coaching certification.ā€

ā€œWith his technical strengths, along with his energy, enthusiasm, and a desire to build strong bridges in the community, he is completely ready to take on his first head coaching role,ā€ added Parkinson. ā€œI look forward to seeing Kelvin grow the program by involving high school coaches and programs in Victoria as he transitions into his new role as the Camosun Chargers menā€™s volleyball head coach.ā€

ā€œOn behalf of the college, I would like to welcome Kelvin to the incredible team at Camosun and the Chargers athletics,ā€ said President, Dr. Lane Trotter. ā€œOur volleyball program has a long history of success at both the provincial and national level, and we are confident that Kelvin can carry on the legacy Charles and previous coaches created.ā€

ā€œWe are very excited to welcome Kelvin to AV¾«Ę· and the Chargers athletics department,ā€ said Vice-President, Student Experience, Heather Cummings. ā€œHis passion for the sport of volleyball makes him a great addition to the legacy of excellence in menā€™s volleyball program.ā€

The menā€™s volleyball team won the PACWEST championship and will head to CĆ©gep Limoilou in Quebec City, QB at the end of the month to face off against the top teams in the country at the CCAA National Championships, which run March 24-27, 2022.
